Grab your cup of bubble tea and read on about how we got started.
Our founder is a bubble tea fanatic has grown up in Canada searching for the perfect milk tea.
Like many other young asian youths, she grew up drinking inexpensive bubble tea at asian food courts, evolved into hanging out at bubble tea cafes during university, and then continued trying out new places as she grew into adulthood.
Bubble tea was (and still is) a fun way to catch up with friends or just to enjoy a satisfying dessert-like treat for yourself. Over time, when a habit becomes a ritual though, that's when quality starts to matter.
So, what are some things she looks for in milk tea?
Ah, glucose syrup.
You might be surprised by this but.....Chatime. Specifically their Grass Jelly Roasted Milk Tea.
Back before Covid, Chatime was one of very few tea shops that offered a roasted milk tea that could come with zero sugar and could be made with oat milk on request.
Chatime is notoriously known as the basic 'McDonald's' of bubble tea, but it's always been consistently good and widely available.
The tea flavour wasn't that strong, and the creaminess was on the watery side, but somehow it still fulfilled the milk tea craving.
But why roasted milk tea instead of classic milk tea?
Roasted milk tea has a much more distinct taste over classic milk tea and stands out as a memorable flavour. Additionally, it's value goes up when not all tea shops offer roasted milk tea. You can always get regular pearl milk tea at any shop.
Roasted Milk Tea is typically made with roasted oolong (also known as Iron Goddess) tea leaves or roasted green tea (traditionally hojicha from Japan).
Roasted oolong and roasted green tea both have a nutty, earthy flavour that brightly contrasts with milkiness of creamer. The toasted flavour leaves a lasting impression that stays on the back of your mind, and is so very delicious.
Tea is the essence of Just Great Tea bubble tea (it's in the name!), and we made sure to include roasted ground hojicha in our bubble tea powder and roasted green tea leaves with the kit.
Unlike hojicha, oolong is not as widely available roasted, nor is it typically used in microground form. Hojicha has over one hundred years of history (est. 1920) and is regularly made to be consumed as an instant powder, just like matcha.
To achieve the best instant bubble tea, it was almost a no brainer to use hojicha in our bubble tea powder. Additionally, in the case for whatever reason you didn't want to use tea leaves, we created the bubble tea powder with enough hojicha by default to be enjoyed as it is.
